# Understanding the "Information Dock" in GRAVITY In the expansive world of digital interfaces, maintaining an engaging and informative employee experience is paramount. GRAVITY, is designed for interactive displays and user guidance, features a unique component known as the "Information Dock." This tool is pivotal for managing how information is presented when specific elements on a site are either absent or dynamically vary in visibility. The Information Dock primarily serves two functions within the interface, enhancing both flexibility and user interaction. ![[auto-open-callout-in-information-dock-1.jpg]] Figure 1 - Information Dock named "Release Notes" with open "Release Note" Callout # Function 1: Managing Missing Target Elements One of the key functions of the Information Dock is to handle scenarios where Callouts or other informational overlays intended to guide or inform employees — are supposed to appear but cannot due to the absence of their target elements on the Application. ## Automatic Management by GRAVITY GRAVITY automatically detects when a target element for a Callout is missing from the displayed content. Instead of leaving the user without the critical information or guidance, the system cleverly defaults these Callouts to the Information Dock. This ensures that all designated information remains accessible, avoiding any potential confusion or loss of functionality. ### Configuration for Callouts To optimize employee experience and ensure that Callouts behave as intended despite the varying availability of their target elements, Authors need to adjust settings in the Callout edit menu. Here is how to configure it: 1. Access the Callout Edit Menu: 1. Navigate to the second step in the editing panel of the Callout. 2. Adjust Hotspot Placement: 1. In the "Hotspot placement" section, users will find a dropdown menu labeled "Wait for Callout target." 2. From here, it is crucial to select the right option based on the behavior of the target object: **Target-object is sometime hidden:** Use this option if the target object tends to be intermittently invisible but is generally present. **Target-object appears randomly:** This setting should be applied when the appearance of the target object on the interface is unpredictable. # Function 2: Dedicated Display in the Information Dock The second core function of the Information Dock is to exclusively showcase certain callouts that are designated to appear only within the Information Dock itself. This feature is particularly useful for information that benefits from permanent visibility or needed to avoid cluttering the main interface. ### Setting a Callout to Appear Only in the Information Dock Users can decide to display some callouts exclusively in the Information Dock instead of attaching them to specific elements on the page. This can be facilitated through a simple setting adjustment: 1. Go to the Callout Edit Menu: 1. The Setting is within the second step of the Callout edit process. 2. Hotspot Placement Configuration 1. Look for the checkbox named **Show only in Information Dock** within the **Hotspot placement** section. By marking this checkbox, the Callout will be set to display exclusively in the Information Dock, regardless of the state or presence of any target elements in the main content area.
